PROJECT SUMMARY

Newcastle has experienced regular floods over the past 40-50 years, with the most notable taking place in August 2008 flooding Bryansford Avenue and onto the Shimna Road where it caused damage to approximately 36 properties. The core aim of the Shimna Flood Alleviation project is to deliver an environmentally and socially sensitive flood

protection scheme which works to protect properties, infrastructure, and businesses. SDG was proud to supply the main contractor Dawson-Wam with some key waterproofing materials for the 1.45km flood wall.

THE CHALLENGE

As with all water-retaining structures, waterproofing and protection of the concrete are vital. With key public infrastructure projects, long-term performance is essential to offer the best return on investment for the country.

With structural movement to be expected in all concrete structures, highly adaptable elastomeric materials are the key to offering long-term durability.

OUR SOLUTION

Working closely with the site team, SDG proposed a range of civil engineering sealants for the floor wall. We propose the use of a polymer-based chemical-resistant hydrophilic strip for construction joints, along with a high-performance polyurethane joint sealant for sealing movement joints.

These systems worked in unison to provide adequate protection for all areas requiring additional watertightness.

THE RESULT

Working closely with the site team we supplied a range of waterproofing materials and construction accessories to site over the duration of the project. Our technical team were on hand to quickly resolve any product queries.

Products supplies included:

  • Flowstop Hydrophilic stirp
  • Hyperseal Expert 150 Joint Sealant
  • Constructions Accessories
